Learning and Teaching

Thank you for a wonderful term! We wish everyone a safe and happy holidays ready for an exciting Term 3! Some exciting things next term are our School Concert, Swimming Program and exploring the Olympics and location, location, location!

In year 1/2 We Are Learning To (WALT)...

READING: identify the features of a description with a focus on the purpose, punctuation, adjectives, verbs & proper/nouns

SPELLING:

Grade 1 - 'i' as in tin

Grade 2 - 'ou' as in house

WRITING: use our senses to write descriptions

MATHS:

Grade 1: Recognise, describe and order Australian coins according to their value

Grade 2: Count and order small collections of Australian coins and notes according to their value

UNIT OF STUDY: Explore the observable changes that occur in the sky and landscape

ICT: We are learning to identify and explore digital systems for a purpose (including using word processing software and publishing software).

WELLBEING: describe how to use strengths to be a good friend and family member 

Important Notices

Student-Led Conferences
Student-Led Conferences are on Wednesday 22nd between 1:30pm - 7pm. These conferences are a fantastic opportunity for your child to share their learning with you.
 You can book online by following the link to School Interviews Booking System and using the code: qega9
If you are unable to make a booking, but would like to do so; please contact your child's teacher who can book online for you.

Last Day of Term

Friday 24th is the last day of term 3 and students will be dismissed at 2:30pm.

Working With Children Check

All parents/guardians, visitors & volunteers to the school MUST sign in & out of the school and display their WWCC in a lanyard, which is available at the school office.

The Department of Education requires any person involved in an activity where children may be present to have a current WWCC or have supplied proof that they have applied for a WWCC with the Department of Justice. All schools are required to comply with the Working with Children Act 2005.

Volunteers are expected to carry the WWCC card on their person at all times when working or volunteering at the school or during school related activities.

The Marine Ambassadors and Green Gang, along with Miss Oates are searching for some items that either can be recycled or donated to help assist with some AMAZING programs that the students are developing. With the school holidays coming up, do you have any of the following items around the house that could please be recycled or donated ready for next term?

-          Old clothes for scarecrows

-          Children’s gardening gloves

-          Children’s gumboots

-          Plastic seashell sand pit

-          Herbs (seeds or seedlings)

-          Vegetables (seeds, seedlings or plants)

-          Fruits (seeds, seedlings or plants)

PMP this week helped us focus on our fine and gross motor skills.

After reading the story 'Bertie's Socks' we came up with questions we would need to consider when shopping.

Students did coin rubbings and wrote facts about coin features and what they could buy for that amount.

Learning and Teaching

Last week we farewelled Mrs O’Connor as she departed for the upcoming birth of her beautiful baby. We wish her all the best and cannot wait to meet her bundle of joy! By now, many of you will have met Miss Power, who has taken over Grade 2O. She is a fantastic addition to the Junior School and we are very excited to have her on board. Make her feel welcome if you see her in the corridor!

In year 1/2 We Are Learning To (WALT)...

READING: Synthesise - combine the important features from the text to assist our comprehension

SPELLING:

Grade 1 - Week 9: 'a' makes the 'o' sound (as in swan)

Grade 2 - Week 9: “or” (as in fork)

WRITING: publish an information report with a title, description and conclusion

MATHS:

Grade 1: identify outcomes of familiar events and represent collected data with objects and drawings

Grade 2: identify activities that involve chance and create displays of data using lists, table and pictographs and interpreting them

UNIT OF STUDY: Explore the observable changes that occur in the sky and landscape

ICT: We are learning to identify and explore digital systems for a purpose (including using word processing software and publishing software).

WELLBEING: identify times when we have shown an act of kindness to a peer or family member

We have introduced spelling activities this term for students to further strengthen their spelling. They have the freedom to choose which activity they conduct each week and we encourage them to at least try each activity by the end of the year. Homework will be due Thursday and new homework will be sent out on Fridays. Please remember to check they are doing their spelling words and reading to a parent nightly.

Making News

We were very excited to have James Thomas visit the Junior School to demonstrate some amazing scientific activities for us on Monday. The kids loved the volcano, density of liquids, elephant toothpaste and detergent demonstrations. Thank you for visiting us James!

We have been learning about Chance & Data in the Junior School and have really enjoyed surveying each other about our preferences and recording the data.

  We welcomed six chickens and one duckling into the Mentone Park Hatching Hub over the last fortnight, don’t forget to stop by to check out how cute they are!

In year 1/2 We Are Learning To (WALT)...

READING: synthesise what we have read to improve our understanding and comprehension of the important parts within the text.

SPELLING: 

Grade 1 - Week 7: 'ng' as in king

WRITING: write information reports related to our Unit of Study, including a heading, who, what, when, where, why and a conclusion.

As the days become colder, please remember that school uniform does not include leggings with summer school dresses. Please wear pants or the tunic with tights. Term 2 is not a SunSmart term and therefore students are not required to wear their school hats at lunch and recess.

Making News

A wonderful day was had by all on Monday when Level 1 and 2 visited the Melbourne Museum and the Botanic Gardens. We explored the Bug's Alive section at the museum before moving on to view other exhibits. 

Next we climbed back on the bus and off we went to the Ian Potter Garden where we met out educators and started our adventure in the Botanic Gardens. We delved our hands into slimy compost worms, saw sleeping possums, wove our way around hidden tracks and learnt about the vegetation, made potpourri bags in the herb garden, went ponding and much more. 

There were lots of sleepy little adventurers on the bus on the way home but we had a wonderful time. Thank you so much to all the fantastic parents and friends who helped make our excursion a success.

Week 4: use clues in the text to predict and infer what is going to happen – narrative texts
