Junior School Newsletter 2018 - Term 1, Week 5

Term 1 2018, Week 5

We can't believe it but it's true... we are at the half-way mark of Term 1 already! We are so impressed by how comfortably the students have settled in and are working towards their goals, what a fantastic start to the year! It was wonderful to catch up with parents last week during the 'Meet the Teacher' night, and we are grateful to those who were able to attend the Parent Information Sessions this week. We discussed the wonderful programs we have at MPPS and were able to answer questions that parents had about reading, handwriting and homework. There are copies of the information booklet available in the Junior School Area for those who were unable to attend.

In READING this fortnight, we have been learning how to make connections between ourselves, the books that we read, and the world.

During WRITING this fortnight, we have been writing our own acrostic and shape poems, as well as creating our own chants and rhyming poems.

Our latest topic in MATHS has been investigating data and chance. We have been collecting and sorting data, then recording it in pictographs and bar charts. We are also investigating probability and the likelihood of particular events taking place (using will happen/certain, might happen/possible, won't happen/impossible).

This week we continued our INQUIRY topic by investigating emotions and how we can get to know each other.

Our focus in SPELLING is:
·         Grade 1: The digraph /ar/ making the sound 'ar' as in car.
·         Grade 2: The graph /y/ making the sound 'e' as in pony.

The PITW key concept we have been focusing on this week is treating others the way we would like to be treated.
